Classically trained homeopaths will often prescribe a “single” remedy (called a constitutional remedy) however, one first needs to know that the necessary actions of ”reversing pathologies” by the way of effective drainage, detoxification and organotherapy is required. Until this has been done, it is very difficult to get a true picture of the pets constitution. We are at your service, with a team of dedicated Animal Naturopathic Practitioners and Homeopathic Veterinary Board of Advisors.

Thus, the non-classical approach, while less elegant and less intimate, has an appeal because it attempts to reveal and address underlying toxic burdens ranging from pesticides to parasites, from vaccinations to viruses, that afflict the organism and lie at the root of chronic degenerative disease. The classical homeopath asserts that the proper single remedy can invigorate the vital force to overcome such burdens – and I have indeed seen situations where this indeed was the case. On the other hand, there are many cases in which this has not been the case.
Classical or Contemporary Homeopathy?
By Frank King, DC
Two major styles of homeopathy have developed since its inception in the late 1700s: classical homeopathy and contemporary homeopathy. Since 1979 we have tried and tested these two approaches, and correlated the results.
During this time our doctors and support staff have utilized these methods and correlated them with good hard copy diagnostic backup, including: x-ray; computerized blood; urine and saliva workups; questionnaires; ECG, EEG, EMG; pulmonary function; thermography, etc. The classical procedures included the classical method for case taking using computerized repertorization. The contemporary methods include electro-acupuncture testing, applied kinesiology and sublingual testing procedures using combination formulas.
Classical homeopathy is the original system that was developed approximately 190 years ago. This style of homeopathy offers a vast amount of comprehensive information. It is recommended that the serious homeopathic practitioner become familiar with this system and apply classical procedures when found practical or necessary.
No matter what contemporary style of homeopathy you may practice, the principles and practice of classical homeopathy can be helpful and sometimes essential in correcting difficult cases. Through researching and testing the various homeopathic methodologies, I have found that the classical approach alone has its problems, the primary one being the time that is involved with taking a detailed case history. It takes approximately 45 minutes to one and a half hours to acquire and process the necessary information to provide the appropriate remedy. It could take three or four remedy tries over a period of one or two months to finally find the correct remedy or remedies for just one particular aspect of a complex health profile. It is my opinion and experience that the classical procedures, in general, will not provide any better results than a good contemporary approach like I have designed and applied to my practice.
With the advent of the industrial revolution, environmental toxicities, vaccinations, suppressive drug therapies, and the basic evolution of the disease processes has drastically complicated the manifestation of today’s dis-ease patterns. The more comprehensive approaches of the contemporary homeopathic concepts have shown greater effectiveness when applied properly. In general, to meet today’s more complex challenges in health care, a partial analogy can be made between classical homeopathy and the HIO chiropractic technique. As good as both of these procedures are, we need a more comprehensive armamentarium to overcome today’s more complex health dilemmas. The dis-ease patterns of today are much more complex than they were 150 years ago when classical homeopathic principles were developed.
The following concepts of contemporary homeopathy are what we have found to best meet the needs of today’s more complex and elusive health care problems. The comprehensiveness and synergistic quality of homeopathic combinations are essential. In the past, many homeopathic combinations were poorly formulated: either there were too few ingredients, providing a poor percentage of results, or too many ingredients working against each other having an antidoting or inimical effect.
Since 1979 my company has been developing the most effective application of homeopathic formulations to meet today’s more complex health needs. Due to some inconsistencies in the homeopathic literature concerning which individual homeopathic remedies may antidote another remedy, we began to clinically challenge this aspect of homeopathic practice.
By meticulously correlating the results of using various homeopathic remedies together, we have found that approximately 30 percent of the homeopathic remedies that have been considered antidoting to one another worked well together in clinical testing. Also, certain individual remedies, when given together, are synergistic.
By clinically applying the individual homeopathic remedies that are correcting today’s manifestations of dis-ease, KBP has developed new levels of effectiveness for conditions ranging from anorexia and bulimia to warts and weight control. Unique to our method of the formulation is the hypo-allergenic stabilizer potassium sorbate, originating from the mountain ash tree and vinegar. This allows our formulas to be alcohol-free, sugar-free, yeast free, nonhabit forming, and free of side effects.
We have found that making each ingredient in three different potencies (9x, 30x, & 100x) and then mixing them together, provides a broad therapeutic spectrum which can help a much greater percentage of people. This procedure also provides much faster and longer lasting results. The broad spectrum of potencies provides a continuous therapeutic effect as the potency requirements change during the healing process. The body will utilize the ingredient(s) it needs at the potency (potencies) it needs when it needs it. Having these multiple potencies in one formula provides much more efficient utilization of the homeopathic remedy by the body, resulting in a more efficient cure.
Approximately 90 percent of all the cases we have successfully treated using classical homeopathy was accomplished within the 9x, 30x, and 100x potencies. Though this method of the formulation is very labor-intensive, it is well worth the quality of results it provides. It is 90 times the labor to make a 100x homeopathic remedy as compared to a 10x homeopathic remedy.
Contemporary vs. Classical Homeopathic Management Procedures
Using quality designed, contemporary homeopathic combination formulas will provide faster results than the classical approach. In the mindset of today’s patients, getting results quickly is essential.
The classical approach will take a detailed case history and repetorize the many aspects of each symptom. This will usually take approximately one to one and a half hours for the experienced classical homeopath. Then the single remedy of the first choice is given at a particular potency. If that specific, single homeopathic remedy does not produce the expected change in three days to three weeks, depending upon the severity or chronicity of the condition, then a second specific remedy is tried, and so on.
The process of trying different, single remedies until one work could take months. This may cause the patient to lose faith in your approach. I am not trying to take away from the classical approach; it may be necessary at times. Even with the contemporary approach, a number of formulas may need to be applied. Cracking a complex health case can be related to opening a safe. A different combination may be needed at a specific time to correct the various layers of a complex dis-ease condition. Applying the patient health appraisal questionnaire (PHAQ), and a sublingual testing procedure to confirm which formula the body will respond to at a particular time is the key to correcting a complex case. In the management of acute conditions, it is essential to get results fast or you will lose the patient. In managing chronic conditions, it is essential that a more comprehensive treatment program be used, including multiple remedies, multiple potencies, and detox and drainage remedies. The contemporary combination approach, properly applied, has repeatedly provided better clinical results.
Another “bottom line” difference between the contemporary and classical homeopathic approaches is the fruits of the doctor’s labor. Using both procedures since 1979, the case visit averages varied between 10-15 visits, plus a maintenance program, but the difference in the number of patients seen was significant.
The classical doctor may average 8-10 patients per day. The contemporary approach allowed us to see 50-100 patients per day and achieve results that were as good or better than that of the classical approach. It seems clear that the contemporary homeopathic approach, when applied with our “user friendly” system, offers many advantages. The doctor is able to help a greater number of patients resulting in both a greater financial and emotional reward.
The Classical Doctor’s Critique of the Contemporary Combination Method
1. “In taking many remedies, they may work against each other.” We have addressed this earlier by explaining our clinical testing negating approximately 30 percent of the remedies considered antidoting. Using properly formulated combinations without antidoting or inimical effects is essential for good results. Also, the combination formula must be comprehensive enough with the proper ingredients to help a high percentage of people the product is formulated to help.
Due to the many poor combinations in the market place I understand much of the justification for the classical concern on this topic.
2. “A patient under the influence of multiple individual remedies in a combination formula may confuse the natural expression of their case. This may later make it difficult to take an accurate case history.” This may occur for a time however by obtaining a thorough case history using the Patient Health Appraisal Questionnaire (PHAQ), the doctor has a good starting place to return to if necessary.
3. “The doctor doesn’t know which remedy actually worked.” This is true, yet it doesn’t matter. Knowing the combination used, the doctor can repeat the combination if necessary, or if it tests positive. If a formula only corrects a condition partially, and no other formulas such as a detox and drainage, or another formula relating to the patients overall condition test positive, the doctor may want to give the single remedy out of the formula in a higher potency such as 1m, 10m, 50m, etc. From a foundation of knowledge of classical homeopathy and a homeopathic materia medica and repertory, the single remedy can be differentiated from the others on the formula label and given in a higher potency.
The Contemporary Doctor’s Critique of the Classical Method
Much of the critique of classical homeopathy has already been listed. However, the following statement may best bring it home to where we live and work: The doctor’s bottom line is how many people can be helped in the most efficient, economical, and ecological way. The contemporary combination approach, without a doubt, far surpasses the classical approach. Applying our “user-friendly” system of contemporary homeopathy provides fast results, profound percentage of correction, and time efficiency for the doctor. This results in greater patient confidence in chiropractic, homeopathy, and in the doctor applying these procedures.

I call my style of practicing “Clinical Homeopathy”, and it is comprised of several branches, as outlined below. The clinical approach includes all the forms of classical and constitutional prescribing plus a lot more. Clinical Homeopathy is more diverse and practical than the narrow-minded approach of the so-called Classical Homeopaths. One of the main reasons many Homeopaths fail to be successful in practice is because they are not taught “real world homeopathy”. They are taught “idealistic homeopathy”, which is the classical approach. You need an ideal patient for classical homeopathy to work; they are the exception in homeopathic practice not the rule.
Etiology overrules symptomatology in clinical practice. If the cause of the disorder is a drug then the homeopath should be prescribing accordingly. The symptoms are an expression of the Vital Force. Each case tells you via the etiology and symptoms whether to go for homeopathy, tautopathy or isopathy, etc.
A high potency prescriber is like a musician who only knows how to playing high notes, they can never be consider a master musician. Homeopaths should be fluent in all potencies including the use Herbal tinctures and also be familiar Allopathic drugs.
We should not play this game, where the cure is the only prize. Healing is a continual process; we have to keep the patient moving towards better health. A cure is not the goal, better health and better living is the goal. Health is a part of living, growing and aging. Palliation is also important; some serious cases can be palliated for years. What’s wrong with that?
The Major Branches of Clinical Homeopathy
The prescribing of potentized remedies based on their symptom similarity to the disorder being treated. We need to know the homeopathic therapeutics first and foremost. This is an example of a remedy curing a disorder that it is similar to, based on provings and toxicology reports.
The prescribing of potentized remedies based on their biological similarity to the disorder being treated. Isopathy is the science of miasms, nosodes, epidemics, vaccinations, etc. This is an example of a virus curing a virus, or a bacteria curing a bacteria, etc.
1The prescribing of potentized remedies based on their chemical similarity to the disorder being treated. Tautopathy is the science of antidotes and toxicology. This method excels in removing the effect of drugs and toxins. Drug layers, drug abuse, addictions, craving and drug overdoses can all be treated with tautopathic methods. The first remedy ever prescribed in homeopathy was a tautopathic one not a homeopathic one. Hahnemann used the remedy China to treat China poisoning: that was tautopathy. He antidoted Peruvian bark poisoning with potentized Peruvian bark. Where was the need to take a long case history as the classicals do? This is an example of a poison curing a poison.
The prescribing of potentized remedies based on their sympathetic similarity to the disorder being treated. This the folklore uses of potentized remedies. This is an ancient homeopathic science. Here, the homeopathic remedy is selected according to folklore, flowers essences, gemstones, herbs, astrology, etc. By understanding sympathies and antipathies one can treat a variety of disorders. These remedies can also be given to healthy people to help enhance normal human functions. Like meditation, dreams, creativity, memory, speech, stamina, sports, etc.
Tautopathic Prescribing Methods
In the USA, the top big killers are:
1. Heart disease
4. Allopathic prescribed drugs kill outright 120,000 people per year: these are the reported cases only.
Indirectly they kill many more thousands of people. Modern medicine uses weird numerology to manipulate the statistics and they call it a medical science. The average American has a 9000% greater chance of dying from allopathic drugs than from a loaded gun in their own home! A person has double the chance of dying from their doctor than from a car accident.
Classical Homeopathy is useless in cases of severe pathologies and patients on allopathic drugs. My practice consists of 60% to 70% of these types of patients. Most patients today are on 2-3 different drugs. Therefore we should be familiar with the top allopathic drugs being prescribed today. We need to know the top heart, blood pressure and diabetic remedies, etc. We need to know: drug side affects, drug overdoses, withdrawal symptoms, etc. We need to know them as potentized remedies also.
In homeopathic prescribing, I never take a patient off their drugs, therefore the allopaths don’t object. I always give low potencies of the indicated remedies along with herbal tinctures. Why? Because low potencies given daily are less prone to be antidoted by the drugs. I give higher potencies for drug overdoses, and acute withdrawal symptoms. Once the patient is doing better, the drug doses are lowered and eventually stopped. We can get patients off their drugs by treating the underlying reason they are taking the drugs. As the allopathic drugs are reduced, the cure rate is increased.
There are 1500 new drugs annually; these drugs are new to the human gene pool. Therefore any approved drug is still one foreign to human DNA for generations. The true toxics effects of any drug may not be known for at least 40 years or longer. Human are being chemically manipulated, poisoned and experimented on, for money and no other reason. Chemotherapy is as toxic as getting cholera and but we have to pay the chemo poisoning and cholera is free!
We are also being poisoned by Synthetic Chemicals called Xenobiotics that have been around since the early1900’s. Since then there are thousands new xenobiotics every year also. Tap water has 56,000 xenobiotics, the US government tests for only 56 additions of these chemicals added to tap water. Since 1900, 2 million pesticides, herbicides and chemicals are in the human blood stream.
Example: In brain tumor cases, a chemical called Sodium Laurel Sulphate may be a cause of the cancer. This chemical is found in most shampoos to create foam, even the ones in the health stores. Sodium Laurel Sulphate is detected in the blood stream after one use only. We shampoo our baby’s hair with a cancer-causing agent on a daily basis!
The Nine Methods of Tautopathic Prescribing
A practitioner needs to be familiar with the Mims or BNF (British National Formulary) of allopathic drugs. It is important not to be predjudice about Allopathy, but to understand their drugs, as any morbific agent, such as a grief or trauma. In the treatment of patients who are on drugs, if you can use tautopathy first, you can demonstrate what homeopathy can do.
1. Tautopathic Prescribing for Drug Side Effects.
Drug side effects are a major obstacle to the cure. The biggest hazard lies in mixing up the case. We can get acute side effects of drugs and chronic symptoms of the patient confused. It’s important to separate these two. We need to learn to distinguish between the side effects of the drugs and the symptoms of the patient when we analyze the case history. We need to learn the symptoms of allopathic drugs like we do with the homeopathic remedies.
Example: You might ask, “did you have these symptoms before or after the pill /HRT?” Then, depending on the answer, you might look at remedies like Oophorinum, Ovarian, Oestrogen, etc.
2. Tautopathic Prescribing for Drug Layers
“Never been well since taking a drug or chemical poisonings” is a common phenomenon in modern practice. Drug poisonings can leave a drug layers. If a drug layer exists in the case then it must be removed first. Otherwise, the patient’s health will not improve. Mixing these drug layers with the general case is a big mistake. Also ignoring the top layer of the case can lead to a failure to cure or even palliate.
3. Tautopathic Prescribing for Drug Withdrawals
The drug withdrawal symptoms are a whole new case. Treat all drug withdrawals as acute, and use the tautopathic remedies in higher potencies. Flush the drugs out with water, by putting the tautopathic remedies in water. Also use herbal tinctures to help with the detoxification process. Avena Sativa for morphine or heroin withdrawal. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy should be treated as acute poisonings. Go for the herbs that fit the organ and give the tautopathic remedies.
4. Tautopathic Prescribing for Drug Addictions
Clinical homeopathy can assist greatly in the removal of cravings and addictions. Both psychological and physiological addictions can be treated effectively. Cravings for cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, marijuana, or allopathic drugs are all treatable with tautopathics. Is this being taught in the homeopathic colleges?
Example: for alcohol craving: Lachesis, Quercus rubens, Sulphuric acid or Amethyst, (known as the sobriety stone). However, Alcohol in potency is a great remedy. Alcohol dehydrates the brain and can lead to many chronic disorders, including epilepsy.
5. Tautopathic Prescribing for Drug And Chemical Overdoses
Acute drug overdoses are a common cause of death in our society. Knowing the correct tautopathic or homeopathic remedies can save someone’s life.
Example: Barbiturate overdose symptoms are slurred speech, drowsiness, murmuring, and heavy eyes, followed by coma and death. Phenobarb. in potency is the antidote for phenobarb. The clinical picture of Gelsemium also fits
6. Tautopathic Prescribing of Allopathic Drugs Based On Their Allopathic Indications, as in the BNF/MIMS
In spite of all the new provings going on these days, I believe learning allopathic drugs is more important. We instantly have 1,000 new chemical remedies. This involves prescribing a remedy based on its allopathic indications, because it is already a well-proven remedy.
Example: Ritalin is used in hyperactivity therefore it has that similar affinity, for that disease. It is a stimulant that treats over stimulated children. Therefore Ritalin in potency is a great remedy for treating hyperactivity.
Example: Dopamine is the drug for Parkinson’s disease. Therefore Dopamine is a remedy for Parkinson’s disease. These patients also have a dopamine deficiency.
Example: a child is a Silica constitution at birth, but after abuse goes into a Staphisagria layer, then, after difficult teenage years he gets given Prozac. These remedies have an affinity for each other; the fact that prozac treats a Staphisagria like condition means that the patient is sensitive to prozac. Drugs like prozac are new remedies: they stand with staphisagria, Arsenicum & Carcinosin. We must be unprejudiced and treat them like another remedy.
7. Tautopathic Prescribing of Allopathic Drugs and Chemicals Based on Their Homeopathic Indications.
Remedies like Lithium, Alcohol, Mercury, Lead and Adrenalin have been in the repertory for over a hundred years; via provings and case histories we have the indications for prescribing them as homeopathic remedies. That means any drug or chemical can be used as a remedy to treat things beyond it’s normal allopathic indications.
8. Tautopathic Prescribing of Preventative Remedies
Also known as prophylactic tautopathy: If one knows a person is about to be exposed to a toxic substance then one can give a tautopathic remedy to help them through the toxic exposure.
Example: Before a visit to the dentist give the anaesthetic in potency, especially if the patient has a history of poor recovery from that drug. Likewise for chemotherapy you can give Cadmium sulph., on the day of the chemo treatment to lessen the side affects of the treatment.
9. Tautopathic Prescribing for Detoxification.
Naturopaths strongly believe in detoxification and homeopaths should too. Knowing methods of detoxification will save lives. Our bodies are made of 75% water; therefore the Cell Salts are very important remedies. Cell Salts are about cleaning the intra-cellular water that has become poisoned. Everything including aging comes down to cell water, cellular dehydration being the cause of many problems.
In the US, there is a product called “Bioplasma”, it has all of the 12 tissue salts in each tablet. You take them by placing the Cell Salts in a bottle of water & shake it up, the energy of the water changes. I call this Bio-water; it is like a homeopathic I.V. The best time to take this is at the Kidney hour, which is between 6.25am and 10.17am.
Another method is to place the Cell Salts in water bottles, then add the tautopathic remedy in last: the sequence is important as the remedy placed in last overrides the others. In cigarette addiction, place the Cell salts in water, then add Nicotine 30C and then do a flush for 7 days. The more the water, the more powerful it becomes. You can “layer” the water
Example: Detox tonics can be made with Pure Water + Cell Salts + Herbs + Tautopathic remedy. Whatever the last potency or the highest potency added is what influences the tonic the most. Distilled water is the best. Carry out the flush for 7 days, add herbs and remedies for the organs and this will help pull out toxins.
Caution should be used when applying these detox tonics, I recommend they be used for short period of time only, and that then a break is given and the detox repeated only if necessary.
To summarise, knowing clinical homeopathy will be a great boon to anyone in practice today and in the future. Knowing tautopathic prescribing is absolutely essential because of the fact that the majority of the human population is being poisoned o the coming year n a daily basis and I hope to be teaching a post-graduate course on clinical homeopathy and tautopathy in the UK in the coming year.
Homeopathic combination remedies are formulas in which several homeopathic substances are mixed together into one remedy. This untraditional approach to using homeopathic medicine is commercially popular in many countries. While these remedies are not thought by homeopaths to be as effective as individually chosen medicines, they do work and research has verified this. Yet, homeopaths consistently find that single homeopathic medicines have the potential to truly cure a person’s disease, while combination medicines at best provide safe but temporary relief of symptoms.
The same researchers who conducted the study on asthma earlier described also performed a study on the treatment of hayfever.19 This double-blind, placebo-controlled study prescribed a 30c potency of a combination remedy made from 12 common pollens. The results showed that those subjects taking the homeopathic remedy had six times fewer symptoms than those given the placebo. Both groups of subjects were allowed to use an “escape” medicine (an antihistamine) if their remedy didn’t work adequately. The study showed that homeopathic subjects needed this medicine half as often as did those given the placebo.
Another example of significant results from a homeopathic combination remedy was in the treatment of women during their ninth month of pregnancy.20 Ninety women were given the 5c potency of the following remedies: Caulophyllum, Arnica, Cimicifuga, Pulsatilla, and Gelsemium. They were given doses of this combination remedy twice daily during the ninth month. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed that women given the homeopathic medicines experienced a 40% (!) shorter labor than those given a placebo. Also, the women given the placebo had four times (!) as many complications of labor as those given the homeopathic medicines.
One of the limitations of research on combination remedies is that the results do not reveal whether the effective treatment came from one specific medicine or from the unique combination of remedies. A recent study of 22 healthy women in their first pregnancies tested Caulophyllum, one of the medicines used in the study cited above, which was administered in the 7c potency during the active phase of labor (one dose per hour repeated for a maximum of 4 hours). The time of labor for those women given the homeopathic medicine was 38% shorter than for women given a placebo.21 This trial was not double-blind; however, the researchers recently completed a double-blind trial and confirmed their earlier results.22
A popular homeopathic external application marketed as TraumeelTM has been studied for its efficacy in the treatment of sprained ankles.23 This combination of 14 remedies in 2x to 6x potencies was given to subjects with sprained ankles. After 10 days, 24 of the 33 patients who were given the homeopathic medicine were pain-free, while 13 of 36 patients given a placebo experienced a similar degree of relief. This same medicine was also used in the treatment of traumatic hemarthrosis (joint swelling) and was shown to significantly reduce healing time as compared to a placebo. Objective measurements of joint swelling and movement and evaluation of the synovial fluid at injury were assessed.24
A study of 61 patients with varicose veins was performed double-blind and placebo-controlled.25Three doses of a popular German combination of eight homeopathic medicines were given daily for 24 days. Measures were venous filling time, leg volume, and subjective symptoms. The study found that venous filling time improved in those given the homeopathic medicines by 44%, while it deteriorated in the placebo group by 18%. Other measures also had significant differences.
In addition to the various clinical studies on humans, there has also been some research using homeopathic medicines to improve the health of animals. German researchers have shown that dairy cows given Sepia 200c experienced significantly fewer complications of birth than those given a placebo.26 Low-potency (1x to 6x) combinations of Lachesis, Pulsatilla, and Sabina, or Lachesis, Echinacea, and Pyrogenium, along with Caulophyllum given to pigs had preventive and therapeutic effects on infections (inflammation of the breasts and the uterus) as well as on diarrhea in the piglets.27
Not all clinical studies on homeopathic combination medicines find efficacy of treatment, but there are often important factors that explain the failure. A Canadian study on the treatment of plantar warts is one such example.28 This randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 162 patients prescribed three medicines to each patient (Because the trial did not mix the remedies together, it is not completely accurate to call the use of these remedies a combination. It is more precise to consider it “polypharmacy,” the use of several medicines). The remedies used were Thuja 30c, Antimonium crud 7c and Nitric acid 7c. Thuja was taken once a week, and the other two remedies were taken once a day.
The trial lasted six weeks. The results showed that there was no noticeable difference between those subjects given the homeopathic medicines and those given a placebo.
Many homeopaths may be initially surprised at the result of this trial because they consider these remedies commonly effective in the treatment of warts. But while the remedies may be effective for treating warts, they are not necessarily effective for all types of warts or in all people. A recent study of homeopathic treatment for various types of warts found that 18 of 19 people with plantar warts were cured in, on average, 2.2 months.29 The most common remedy was Ruta, prescribed to 12 of the 19 patients. Thuja was prescribed for only 3 patients, and Antimonium crud was prescribed for 2 patients.
This study teaches us that individualization and the use of well-chosen remedies are necessary for most effective treatment.
One additional note about research using homeopathic combination medicines: The homeopathic literature refers to the fact that some remedies are antidoted by other remedies. While the medicines in the Canadian trial are not known to antidote each other, homeopaths acknowledge that our understanding of which remedies antidote each other is somewhat primitive (for a listing of which remedies antidote each other, see the appendix in Kent’s Repertory or in the Indian edition of Boericke’s Pocket Manual of Materia Medica with Repertory). Homeopathic research must, therefore, be aware of this possibility so that conclusions from research are not overstated.
