What is stomatitis?

Stomatitis is the inflammation of the buccal mucus membrane. Commonly it is known as mouth ulcer.

Cats with stomatitis also often show inflammation lateral to the palatoglossal folds in the caudal oral cavity (referred to as caudal stomatitis or caudal mucositis).

The primary types of inflammation are:

  1. Ulcerative Stomatitis:   This condition occurs when a significant amount of gum tissue is lost in a cat’s mouth, and it is frequently accompanied by inflammation of the oral tissues.
  2. Oral Eosinophilic Granuloma:   This condition occurs when there is a mass or growth in or near the cat’s mouth, especially on the lips.
  3. Gingival Hyperplasia:  This condition occurs when gum tissue increases and may grow over teeth.

Different types of stomatitis: –

i)   Catarrhal stomach: – it is due to local irritation from excessive smoking, drinking, gum infection, spicy diet or teeth eruption. It may also develop in malnourished kittens and teenager cats. The mucous membrane becomes red, congested; tongue becomes dry, swollen, congested and covered with a thick coating. There may have fouled breathing.

ii)  Infective stomatitis: – this is due to actual infection of the buccal mucus membrane.

This is again of various types, such as:

~   Bacterial:  –  it is due to some organism causing diphtheria, Scarlet fever or Syphilis. Ulcers are saying wheat irregular ragged marching anywhere in sight the mouth cavity.

~   Viral: – feline herpes is contagious from one cat to another. … Cats can catch this virus by sharing litter boxes, food and water dishes with an infected cat, as well as by mutual grooming. Depending on the cause of the stomatitis (i.e. FIV or feline leukemia or Calici virus).  Many cats with stomatitis concurrently shed both herpesvirus and calicivirus.1
* By using the homeopathic formula 1, it can prevent it spreading or can add to meals for the other kittens and cats as a prevention.

~   Fungal:  this type of stomatitis is caused by candida albicans. It is seen in extremely debilitated condition or opt prolonged use of steroids, antibiotics, or cytotoxic drugs. The mouth is dry and microscopically clusters of spores and there may be seen a filaments. In this case improvement top general nutrition and maintenance of oral hygiene is necessary.

iii)    Allergic stomatitis: – it is seen in case of angioneurotic oedema, local allergy from antibiotics.  and
iv)   Stomatitis due to malnutrition:  – it is occur in case of malabsorption syndrome, lack of vitamins particularly of the B complex vitamins

Caudal Stomatitis – commonly called “stomatitis”, which is a misnomer.ANY oral inflammation is “stomatitis”, whether it be gingivitis or a caustic burn.Caudal stomatitis is a very misunderstood oral inflammatory disease in felines. It can be categorized into two types based on the involvement of the caudal aspect of the oral cavity.

Type 1 – If the inflammation does not involve the caudal aspect of the oral cavity.

Type 2 – presents with inflammation to the caudal aspect regardless is inflammation is present elsewhere or not. It is the type 2 that is caudal stomatitis.

Clinical Presentation:
Caudal stomatitis presents as a severe inflammatory reaction of the oral tissues including the caudal mouth, known as caudal mucocitis. This was previously known as faucitis. It is the mucocitis that delineates caudal stomatitis from periodontal disease. Inflammation from periodontal disease will not extend caudal beyond the teeth. The inflammation is usually seen bilaterally with very friable tissue that readily bleeds.

Cats generally present with halitosis, difficulty eating or reluctant to eat, oral pain, pawing at mouth, drooling and poor hair coat due to lack of grooming

Vitamin deficiency that often cause gum disease …. e.g stomatitis

* This can be more COMMON with Malnutrition cat or kittens.

1.    Add a pinch of Bee Pollen to meals   (as this is a natural form of B Complex).

.     Of these extra ones are needed  is  Folic acid
(buy the bioactive one called “Folinic Acid” Liquid from California Gold Nutrition)
For felines:    add 1 drop in meals once a day

3.     B12 (Methylcobalamin) from com are the main vitamins.
For felines and toy dog and other small animals: add 2-3 drop in meals once a day
* It is also seen in are iron deficiency anaemia. In this case appropriate vitamin should be taken.

4.     ZINC Picolinate
The skin DNA doesn’t hold its folds properly in zinc deficiency predisposing to ulcers & eczema.

For felines,  open the capsules of each supplement and add 1/4 to a pinch of the powder mix well into daily meals.  Twice a day.  If after a week and no changes, then add 1/2 the powder from the capsule, twice a day.
Canines:    (small to med to large):  1 powder from capsule twice a day.  If no change after a week, add 2 powder from capsules twice a day.  Continue for 2 months. Then reduce to half for longer.
Equines:   (all sizes)  1 powder from capsule twice a day.  If no change after a week, add 2 powder from capsules twice a day.  Continue for 2 months. Then reduce to half for longer.

5.     Probiotics
Ultimate FLORA” 150 billion (by Renew Life)
Also add a good pinch of the powder in meals of the “Ultimate FLORA” 150 billion (by Renew Life)  I have several probiotics listed in the SCIO, this one was indicated needed from clinical consultation with an acute case of stomatitis.    It takes approx. 2 months of the Probiotic to repair the “gut” fully.
* However, chronic health conditions or malnutritioned health kitties may need to stay on the Probiotic and Colostrum for min of 12 months or longer.

6.    Vitamin C
Symptoms of a Vitamin C Deficiency
A variety of symptoms will show that an individual is suffering from a vitamin C deficiency.

E.G.  Gum Issues –  (e.g. gingivitis, stomatitis, rodent ulcers)
Just as a healthy daily dose of vitamin C contributes to healthy teeth and gums, a  deficiency can cause deterioration of the gums. Periodontal problems are a symptom of a vitamin C deficiency that has been allowed to develop to  a hazardous level.

* Recommend also using a natural type of vitamin c, like

Whole Food Alive – Vitamin C – POWDER                or
Organic True Wholefood Vitamin C – POWDER    or
Pure Radiance Vitamin C – POWDER                        or
BioCeutical Liposomal Vitamin C – LIQUID

DOSING:  Cat, Kitten. dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of powder or liquid liposomal vitamin c into meals, milk drinks (and or/ Herbal Mix   * See page 16-18 pdf HELP SHEET.
Stir well, then add a couple of tablespoons of this liquid in the bowl of milk.
Do this daily.  If you can/ or if your pet does not drink milk, then add it to meals twice a day. It is a tricky condition (stomatitis) often from a lot of stress and lack of real nutrition these rescue kitties do have issues.  But it is treatable using minerals and vitamins, avoiding chemical toxins that further stress the immune system.  As people believe its feline herpes virus causing inflammation.

Below supplement is very important as if your cat or kitten is malnutrition healing is very difficult, this mineral is what will help heal wounds (ulcers, abscess etc)

MUST Use both formulas – herbal and homeopathics and vitamin supplements for 12 months or less or longer – our rescue cats healed fully after 14 months (depending how bad they are).
The two young cats we have had acute pain and could not eat without screaming out.Vet suggested tooth removal, but we know this dose not make any difference and even makes their pain worse as it is a gum skin inflammation condition (not a tooth problem)So you will see after 14 months less or more.. the pet carer can just provide homeopathics AN011-1 twice a day in meals.

Gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia

Use this set along with the powder of the slippery elm made into a liquid in meals and orally if not able to eat without causing intestinal upsets, also use the HAMPL Gastro 89-1 formula if vomiting, diarrhea.

Periodontal (mouth) Infection – gingivitis, stomatitis

Trench mouth (stomatitis) is a severe gum infection caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth. It’s characterized by painful, bleeding gums and ulcers in the gums. Trench mouth is a rapidly progressing form of gingivitis.

Feline stomatitis is a severe, painful inflammation of a cat’s mouth and gums. In most cases, the condition causes ulcers to form in the mouth; these ulcers can involve the lips, tongue, gums, and back of the throat. Cats of any age or breed can be affected. Stomatitis is inflammation of the oral mucosa beyond gingivitis. … Feline calicivirus (FCV) can be isolated from 50 to 100 percent of cats with chronic oral inflammation. A recent investigation found that 88 percent of cats with stomatitis were shedding both FCV and feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) in saliva.

So most likely a viral factor involved, and Cats with FIV and FeLV have more problems with it. Cats with stomatitis are more likely to test positive to herpes and calici viruses then normal cats.

Our of our primary focus would be to heal the gut and digestion at the same time.

Is the result of the colonization of certain pathogenic bacteria in your mouth. This bacterial profile is influenced by the microflora in your gut. The majority of inflammatory diseases start in your (and your pets) “gut”.  It is a symptom not a disease in itself. It is part of the complete digestive system and likely replicates in the intestines with ulcers too. It’s primarily mucosal integrity, or lack of integrity cause and goes with dysbiosis of the digestive tract, poor digestion and increased intestinal permeability, which if left can lead to increased allergies to common environmental triggers. It will inevitably involve adverse bacteria proliferating in the gut, also likely one of those “lovely” DNA viruses like EBV and Feline Herpes etc, so your cat will almost definitely be nutritionally deficient and this is a self-fulfilling aspect, have too many adverse bacteria, possibly a strong virus, increasing intestinal permeability, and poor absorption of any nutrients that the poor thing can actually eat.

Example:  a number of pets have been tested positive for Pasteurella is a gram-negative bacteria.  Pasteurella multocida found in the mouths of approximately 75-80% of all cats. Cats with the tartar build up and gingival  have a higher rate of infection than cats with clean teeth. Symptoms are usually a swelling and local infection around the wound, which may lead to an abscess. More serious systemic symptoms can include sinusitis, pneumonia and brain abscess.

What is a good Probiotic?

The first thing I would introduce some good human probiotics daily into the food like
Ultimate FLORA” 150 billion (by Renew Life)

We have several probiotics listed in the SCIO biofeed back machine, and when testing with cat fur,  this one was indicated needed from clinical consultation with an acute case of stomatitis.

Animal probiotics are expensive, poor quality and shallow spectrum very often so no need to do that, we share similar biomes. Don’t get tooling up on differences between animals and humans in regards to the biome .. here is the mechanism … it’s all “one long tube”.  Mouth affects the gut, and gut affects mouth .. a bidirectional influence. The oral microbiome is an important part of the gut microbiome and tending to its balance should a routine part of any good “gut protocol.”  Indeed, dysbiosis of the oral microbiome (and a leaky oral mucosa) might be key underlying imbalances in the pathogenesis of systemic diseases, including autoimmune (IBD, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren) as well as cardiovascular disease.

If your cat has an infection in and around teeth and gums, abscess in chin or jaw in gum also use in conjunction the HAMPL Drawing Out 16 formula as we need to get out any underlying infection anywhere in the teeth and gum pockets.

Homeopathics have helped some cases, then depending on the history of the cat, some cats need more nutritional help. Plus Chlorella tablets (crushed) add a good pinch of powder in meals daily and Vitamin C powder (wholefood vitamin C or liquid liposomal vit C) added to milk meals.

Herbal Medicinal Uses
Mouth ulcers, phytochemical compounds, recurrent aphthous ulcer
Using the herbs that have proven of the effectiviness of the anti-inflammatory effect of methanolic extract of G. glabra is done by ….. of many plants, such as Coptis chinensis (coptis or golden thread),  Berberis vulgaris, commonly known as Barberry etc.

Reference :   RAS  (recurrent aphthous stomatitis)
To study the effects of total alkaloids (TA) extracted from Rhizoma Coptis Chinensis on experimental gastric ulcer models. Four kinds of experimental ulcer models were established respectively by water-immersion stress, intragastric ethanol, acetic acid erosion, and pylorus ligation. The anti-ulcer effects of TA were evaluated, and compared with that of herbs berberine (Ber) and cimetidine (Cim). TA showed significant inhibitory effects on ulcerative formation induced by water-immersion stress, intragastric ethanol, and pylorus ligation in dose-dependent manner, and showed therapeutic effect on acetic acid erosion-inducing ulcer, in comparison with the control group. The anti-ulcer activity of Ber was less than TA containing equal content of Ber. TA significantly reduced the free acidity, total acidity and total acid output, but didn’t affect the gastric juice volume, gastric pepsin activity, adherent mucus quantity of stomach wall and free mucus dissolving in gastric juice. The suppressive activities of TA on gastric acid secretion didn’t occur when it was administered into dodecadactylon at a dose of 360 mg/kg wt. Moreover, when compared with Cim, the inhibitory effect of TA on gastric acid secretion isn’t proportional to the inhibitory effects on the formation of the 4 kinds of experimental ulcers. TA is a potent candidate in therapeutic drugs for treating gastric ulcer. Its anti-ulcer effective components and mechanism is not only related to Ber and inhibition of gastric acid, but also to other ingredients of TA and mechanism so far unknown.
Berberine and its protoberberine alkaloids palmatine, coptisine and aporphinoid alkaloid of magnoflorine have been confirmed to be the major pharmacologically active constituents of Coptidis Rhizoma against H. pylori[].  Berberine, one of the chemical marker of this formula, was also found to possess simultaneous gastrointestine protective and anti-inflammatory activities.

Calendula has been found to have strong anti-inflammatory properties via powerful flavonoids. These plant-based antioxidants protect cells from free radical damage and pro-inflammatory compounds like C-reactive protein and cytokines. Anti-inflammatory linoleic acid is also found in high concentrations in calendula.
Its powerful anti-inflammatory properties make it a potent remedy for all kinds of inflammatory, issues like diaper rash, dermatitis, ear infections, ulcers, sore throats and more.

It possesses anti-inflammatory properties that are equal to prescription medications without the unpleasant/dangerous side effects.  Boswellia works through entirely different mechanisms than anti-inflammatory drugs. Whereas most drugs function as Cox enzyme inhibitors, Boswellia works by inhibiting lipoxygenase enzymes (LOX), which are powerful contributors to inflammation and disease. By inhibiting LOX enzymes, Boswellia effectively blocks leukotriene synthesis. Leukotrienes play a major role in promoting a whole host of age-associated, inflammation-related diseases including joint problems, intestinal disorders, cancer, and lung-related disease.
In addition, it appears that Boswellia can inhibit the breakdown of connective tissues caused by tumor necrosis factor-alpha, a potent inflammatory agent in the body. And finally, it appears that Boswellia has the ability to modulate the immune system and inhibit inflammatory activity, thereby helping with a number of autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis.

Guaiacum – Anti-rheumatic,  laxative, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic actions of the plant are associated with its rich chemical content.  Guaiacum resin has an advantage over other resins by being not as irritating for the stomach and bowel. Being easy to absorb, it provides fast relief for the symptoms it is taken for. It has been mostly used in herbal medicine for rheumatic conditions and related symptoms. Patients with inflammation and painful joints have been reporting the healing effects of guaiacum. Its anti-inflammatory actions are both helpful in rheumatoid arthritis and chronic rheumatism, lessening recurrence of the attacks.

Guaiacum is also useful for:
For skin disorders, respiratory complaints, and syphilis.
Use it to treat cutaneous diseases, chronic rheumatism, syphilitic diseases and scrofula.
It is an aid for rheumatism, dysmenorrhea, and uterine affections.
Use it externally to provide relief from rheumatism.
Its oral use is useful for blood pressure, tonsillitis, gout, and arteriosclerosis
It promotes discharge of mucous and evacuation of bowels.
It stimulates circulation and purification of blood.

Flowers used to cure bronchitis, asthma, colds, coughs, flu and excess buildup of mucus as well as congestion.
The wood – is helpful for gastric ulcers and gastritis.

Guaiacum also assists in the elimination of uric acid. Use the decoction of wood as a mouthwash to improve oral health and cure oral ulcers.

* Gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia

Use this set along with the powder of the slippery elm made into a liquid in meals and orally if not able to eat without causing intestinal upsets, also use the HAMPL Gastro 89-1 formula if vomiting, diarrhea.

General Dosing and Instructions

For all species, size, and ages.

(a) “HOMEOPATHICS”are sold in either a clear liquid or tiny white pills or granules – both have no odour or taste)

Easy “application dosing” for all species:

  • Homeopathic DROPS (clear liquid) DRIP or APPLY 3 to 4 drops, pat into fur/skin with bottom of bottle. i.e. back of shoulder blades (not orally) which is regarded as one dose for all size species and ages. Note: Liquid homeopathics are more suited for feline, toy dog, fish, birds and other small species
  • Homeopathic PILLS (white pills) crush a pill (or whole) and add to gum/pouch of mouth to dissolve in saliva. Does not need to swallow it.
  • Homeopathic GRANULES (white grain) and a small light sprinkle or a pinch to meals, or stir into water trough or bowl.
Casual repeat dosing can add to water bowl or feed dish or water trough for wildlife or farm animals.

Refer to Bottle Label for suggested frequencies repeat dosing needed per day.
the rule is one must “repeat a dose” more frequently with less time in between each application dose, which is more important than the amount given each time. Repeat application will provide

faster action.

(b) “HERBAL MEDICINES ” (brown liquid – strong odour & tasting)
”Application dosing” for all species and sizes:
Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat : add herbal drops (as recommended on bottle label) to some (unsweetened apple sauce or apple juice) for canines and oral syringe side of mouth. Can add other vitamins (crushed) Alkaline green powders etc. to mix.

Refer to Bottle Label for amount of drops per species size. e.g 60 drops = 1 teaspoon

What I do for example: If I was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to a small bowl add some boiled water (about a teaspoon) to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)

Giving vitamins and supplements (tablets or powders) Note: always crush tablet before adding to food or liquid mix.
Felines or small animals: make up 1 cup of mixture, adding approx. a pinch of some type of Green powder (alkaline powder) or Chlorella powder (cleansing of toxins) or 1/4 Teaspoons of Slippery elm powder (to mask the taste) with 1 teaspoon of herbs if you are having to also give herbal medicines (i.e. brown liquid)
Med to large animals: add twice to three times the amount.

DOSING: Feline or small animal: using an oral syringe draw up 1ml and gently small sips. Or add a teaspoon to meals if they don’t mind eating it with meals (mix well into food) Do not put in Fridge. Room temp is best as too cold is dislike by felines.
DOSING: Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat: try mixing well into food and hand piece before feeding main meals. Or dose same as suggested for felines, but add three times as much herbal medicines and vitamins to 1/2 cup of water or (unsweetened) apple sauce or apple juice.

What I do for example: If i was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to 1/2 cup of boiled hot water to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …. smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)

Slippery Elm Powder
If needing to add or use Slippery Elm powder

FOR CONDITIONS like …. diarrhea, stomach ulcers, or sore inflamed mouth or mouth ulcers, constipation, or IBS (i.e. colitis), plus it can also been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids.

CONVALESCING ..can been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids or not eating very well.
~ Add a small amount of powder to the mix to enough to make a runny liquid mix, if you put too much of the powder it will become thick and gluggy, if this happens you will need to add more liquid to it. Can add crushed vitamins and herbal medicines to this as well. OPTIONS: Oral dose in syringe or add to meals three times a day or more to maintain normal health again, then can stop or reduce frequencies.
