When our pet show symptoms of a dry hacking cough it is often diagnosed or seen as kennel cough virus or after vaccine from kennel injections side effects. If your dog is hacking away or constantly making noises that make it sound like they are choking on something, they may have a case of kennel cough, or canine infectious tracheobronchitis.  Although kennel cough can sound terrible, most of the time it is not a serious condition, and most dogs will recover  (even without treatment, but will be much longer to heal)

What is Kennel Cough?

Just as human colds may be caused by many different viruses, kennel cough itself can have multiple causes. One of the most common culprits is a bacterium called Bordetella bronchiseptica which is why kennel cough is often called Bordetella. Most dogs that become infected with Bordetella are infected with a virus at the same time. These viruses, which are known to make dogs more susceptible to contracting Bordetella infection, include canine adenovirus, canine distemper virus, canine herpes virus, parainfluenza virus and canine reovirus.

Dogs “catch” kennel cough when they inhale bacteria or virus particles into their respiratory tract. This tract is normally lined with a coating of mucus that traps infectious particles, but there are a number of factors that can weaken this protection and make dogs prone to kennel cough infection, which results in inflammation of the larynx (voice box) and trachea (windpipe).

These factors include:

 Exposure to crowded and/or poorly ventilated conditions, such as are found in many kennels
and shelters

 Cold temperatures

 Exposure to dust or cigarette smoke

 Travel-induced stress

Symptoms of Kennel Cough

The classic symptom of kennel cough is a persistent, forceful cough. It often sounds like a goose honk.
This is distinct from a cough-like sound made by some dogs, especially little ones, which is called a reverse sneeze.

Reverse sneezes can be normal in certain dogs and breeds, and usually only indicates the presence of post-nasal drip or a slight irritation of the throat.

Some dogs with kennel cough may show other symptoms of illness, including sneezing, a runny nose, or eye discharge.
If your dog has kennel cough, they probably will not lose their appetite or have a decreased energy level.

Treating and Preventing

Are you aware there are some good Homeopathic Remedies For Kennel Cough? Your dog may not have been around a kennel at all — but may have “Kennel Cough”. The term “Kennel Cough” got its name simply from the fact that it is caused by a virus that is easily spread. It was first recognized as a viral problem many decades ago when it would quickly spread through just about all dogs kept in close proximity. An excellent rundown by Dogs Naturally Magazine on their website details the symptoms and treatment of the problem:

Homeopathic Remedies For Kennel Cough

It’s that time of year again. Cold and flu season doesn’t just affect us, it affects our pets too. One common complaint that can hit your dog this winter season is kennel cough. Kennel cough is exactly what it’s called: it is a cough in your dog, much like a human cold. It is almost always self limiting and can last anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks. The virus is passed easily between dogs. Coughing in dogs can be difficult to detect if you’ve never heard it before: often, it sounds
like your dog is choking or has something in his throat. Normally, the cough is dry and short in duration. Symptoms of kennel cough are normally limited to the upper respiratory tract.

Homeopathy can be very effective for treating kennel cough.

Here are some common remedies that are in our HAMPL Dry Cough 44 homeopathic formula.

Drosera 9C: This is the primary remedy for kennel cough and should be considered for a
dry, hacking cough which may be worse when the dog is laying down.

Bryonia 30C: If the dog’s breathing appears abdominal and the cough is deeper, Bryonia
may fit the bill. The dog will appear to be in pain when he coughs and if you hold his rib
cage when he is coughing, it may relieve his symptoms and pain. The dog may prefer rest
over exercise and motion will aggravate his cough.

Phosphorus 30C: Another remedy for a dry, hacking cough that is worse in cold air.
Phosphorus may be indicated if there are small flecks of blood or blood-tinged mucous.
These dogs will appear chilly, thirsty and unusually hungry.

Spongia Tosta 6C: This remedy is good for a very dry, barking cough. It may be
accompanied by a weak heart. Warm water will generally improve the cough whereas cold
water will aggravate it.

Aconite 6C: The key to this remedy is a sudden onset and this remedy is most effective if
given when symptoms first appear. If given early, Aconite can prevent the kennel cough
entirely. These dogs may appear nervous and fearful and Aconite will help to calm them,
especially in the evening hours.

Rumex crispus 6C: This remedy is associated with an abundance of mucous accompanied
by a persistent cough that frequently changes characteristics. The symptoms will generally
be better in the evening and night and worse in cold air.

Ipecacuanha 30C: Coughing may produce reflexive vomiting. The cough is worse at
night and worse with cold air. The vomit or mucous may be blood tinged. Breathing will
be laboured and the dog may seem to be wheezing

For Treatment in acute “Kennel Cough Virus”

Apply 3 – 4 drops on the body (top of head), repeat every 5 minutes, until relaxed, normally seen after the 3rd repeat dosing. Continue repeats throughout the day for at least 4 times a day.  You can’t overdose, as it’s not the amount given each time that is important, but rather the repeat dosing and time in-between each dosing that provides faster relief.    Also, use for “whooping cough” in infant pets as well.

* Coughing can also be from a “Roundworm lung parasite”.
Which the natural remedy for this parasite is also in the HAMPL Dry Cough 44 formula.

For prevention of  “Kennel Cough Virus”
Stir in several drops to water bowl once a week or whilst at the boarding kennel.  See Canine Certificate for protocol dosing for Immunization.

Chronic Virus
Once the condition has improved, can either stop or continue with casual dosing, can stir in a dose to the filtered water bowl, (or add to farm trough once a week) every time you change it a few times a week. Fine if other animals share water. Alternatively, add a dose to daily meals.

Valley Fever in a dog or cat.

Valley Fever is a condition caused by infection with a type of fungus called Coccidiodes immitis

Coccidiodes organisms live in desert soils and produce long filaments that contain infectious spores. When the soil is disturbed, for example by a dog digging, by construction, or during a windstorm, the spores become airborne and can be inhaled. It is thought that dogs are so frequently diagnosed with Valley Fever because they commonly disturb and sniff dirt in their normal, daily activities.

Once inside the lungs the spores mature and reproduce within “spherules”—small structures in which many “endospores” develop. With time, the spherules rupture releasing the endospores that can then spread the infection within the lungs or the rest of the body.

Symptoms of Valley Fever in Dogs

Many dogs who are exposed to Coccidiodes immitis do not develop symptoms of illness. In these cases, the dog’s immune system is able to contain and destroy the organisms before they can reproduce and cause disease. But when a dog is exposed to a large number of spores or has a weakened immune system, Valley Fever can take hold.

Typical symptoms of an infection that is limited to the lungs include:

  • Coughing
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Poor appetite
  • Weight loss

Additional symptoms are seen when the infection spreads outside of the lungs.
Lameness is not unusual since the joints and bones are commonly affected.
Seizures may develop if the brain is involved.
Other possible symptoms include back or neck pain, abscesses, skin wounds that don’t heal as expected, swollen lymph nodes, eye abnormalities, heart failure, and more.

If any of these symptoms are seen in your pet, please also use in conjunction with other natural medicines corresponding with the symptoms.

e.g.  HAMPL Pneumonia 112 Set    * lung infection – coughing – lethargic – wheezing breathing. If your pet is breathing is raspy or lethargic and coughing, wheezing with very little appetite.

General Dosing and Instructions
Guide

For all species, size, and ages.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES

(a) “HOMEOPATHICS”are sold in either a clear liquid or tiny white pills or granules – both have no odour or taste)

Easy “application dosing” for all species:

  • Homeopathic DROPS (clear liquid) DRIP or APPLY 3 to 4 drops, pat into fur/skin with bottom of bottle. i.e. back of shoulder blades (not orally) which is regarded as one dose for all size species and ages. Note: Liquid homeopathics are more suited for feline, toy dog, fish, birds and other small species
  • Homeopathic PILLS (white pills) crush a pill (or whole) and add to gum/pouch of mouth to dissolve in saliva. Does not need to swallow it.
  • Homeopathic GRANULES (white grain) and a small light sprinkle or a pinch to meals, or stir into water trough or bowl.
Casual repeat dosing can add to water bowl or feed dish or water trough for wildlife or farm animals.

Refer to Bottle Label for suggested frequencies repeat dosing needed per day.
NOTE:
the rule is one must “repeat a dose” more frequently with less time in between each application dose, which is more important than the amount given each time. Repeat application will provide

faster action.

HERBAL MEDICINES

(b) “HERBAL MEDICINES ” (brown liquid – strong odour & tasting)
”Application dosing” for all species and sizes:
Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat : add herbal drops (as recommended on bottle label) to some (unsweetened apple sauce or apple juice) for canines and oral syringe side of mouth. Can add other vitamins (crushed) Alkaline green powders etc. to mix.

Refer to Bottle Label for amount of drops per species size. e.g 60 drops = 1 teaspoon

What I do for example: If I was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to a small bowl add some boiled water (about a teaspoon) to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)

NUTRITION

(c)“NUTRITIONAL Mix
”
Giving vitamins and supplements (tablets or powders) Note: always crush tablet before adding to food or liquid mix.
Felines or small animals: make up 1 cup of mixture, adding approx. a pinch of some type of Green powder (alkaline powder) or Chlorella powder (cleansing of toxins) or 1/4 Teaspoons of Slippery elm powder (to mask the taste) with 1 teaspoon of herbs if you are having to also give herbal medicines (i.e. brown liquid)
Med to large animals: add twice to three times the amount.

DOSING: Feline or small animal: using an oral syringe draw up 1ml and gently small sips. Or add a teaspoon to meals if they don’t mind eating it with meals (mix well into food) Do not put in Fridge. Room temp is best as too cold is dislike by felines.
DOSING: Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat: try mixing well into food and hand piece before feeding main meals. Or dose same as suggested for felines, but add three times as much herbal medicines and vitamins to 1/2 cup of water or (unsweetened) apple sauce or apple juice.

What I do for example: If i was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to 1/2 cup of boiled hot water to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …. smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)

Slippery Elm Powder

If needing to add or use Slippery Elm powder

FOR CONDITIONS like …. diarrhea, stomach ulcers, or sore inflamed mouth or mouth ulcers, constipation, or IBS (i.e. colitis), plus it can also been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids.

CONVALESCING ..can been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids or not eating very well.
~ Add a small amount of powder to the mix to enough to make a runny liquid mix, if you put too much of the powder it will become thick and gluggy, if this happens you will need to add more liquid to it. Can add crushed vitamins and herbal medicines to this as well. OPTIONS: Oral dose in syringe or add to meals three times a day or more to maintain normal health again, then can stop or reduce frequencies.

I have been using this remedy for several years and am delighted with it.
I have been using this remedy for several years and am delighted with it. I board my dogs and we regularly attend dog shows, so I use these great little pills as a preventative for kennel cough…and they work! Even when I have friends whose dogs have gotten sick..my boys are not. I start giving it 2 days before I\’m planning to board them or go to a show, and then each day they are in the kennel or at the show. They do not get bordetella shots and they have never gotten kennel cough. I would hightly recommend this product.

I use this product religiously when showing my dogs. 2 days before, during and two days after a weekend dog show and NEVER have brought kennel cough home. Even thought others attending the same show have gotten sick. Also when boarding my boys, I use this. Again several days before they go to the kennel and all during their stay. Even if kennel cough has sickened other dogs at the kennel , mine come home happy and healthy. I recommend this product to everyone. I have been using it for years, and have yet to have a cough incident. I HIGHLY recommend it. Carol O. Clinton Twp., MI.

We were desperate a couple of Christmases ago when both our dogs came down with Kennel Cough, we suspected it was from drinking out of a communal bowl up at our local park. It was a Public Holiday and frantic we phoned Adam, he opened up for us and we were able to pick up a bottle of Cough Clear, needless to say the dogs came right very quickly and we have recommended this and many other HAMPL products to other doggy people. My neighbours’ dogs on both sides of me contracted very severe kennel cough – it was passed from one to the other. My 10 y.o. dog then gave a hacking cough one morning. I purchased the ANO44 Cough remedy, and within a week, my dog was back to his normal self – just the odd cough now and then. He has recovered fully now, and I am so impressed with this remedy for the fast recovery it has given my boy.
