Marek’s in Birds
Very simply, Marek’s is a Viral Infection in poultry, primarily chickens.
Marek’s is a viral infection that affects the nervous system of chicks.
Once it gets in to your flock, it is always present.
It causes the legs to become paralyzed, and the wings to droop. Death can occur with in a few days Interestingly, the vaccine for Marek’s Disease does not keep a chick from being infected with the virus. The vaccine keeps the chicken from being paralyzed from the virus.
Marek’s virus is part of herpes family there are four strains that affect the chicken in different ways.
How is it spread– bird to bird contact, dander and dust in poultry housing.
1.Cutaneous form – red swollen feather follicles
2.Neural form – progressive paralysis, labored breathing, diarrhea, death
3.Ocular form- gray oddly shaped iris, blindness and death
4.Visceral form – tumors on internal organs
It can come in several “forms” and symptoms can include, but are not limited to:
Partial or total paralysis of the legs, sometimes wings,
and even neck;
visceral lymphoma (cancerous tumors in the body),
tumors or growths on the skin,
or poor health, to name a few.
Some chickens get only one symptom, and some get more than one. Some chickens get symptoms, while some don’t show any signs. It is a very common disease, as it is spread via chicken dander (dust) and is easily spread on new chickens, the wind, your clothes and shoes, and even wild birds can transport it. It does not always show up in quarantine. It can be fatal, and there is no cure. Some chickens do survive it, and many build resistance to it.
If you suspect you have Marek’s disease in your flock, do not panic, but please do educate yourself. This is a somewhat complicated disease and the very best thing you can do for yourself and your chickens is to learn about it and take an educated approach to managing Marek’s to prevent and restore health and immunity naturally.
There are different types of Mareks in chickens.
The most common are – Nerve, Ocular (eye), Visceral (tumor producing).
The Nerve (most commonly seen) type can become apparent very quickly and exhibits symptoms as slight to severe paralysis in the legs; this is often seen as a progressive paralysis. The type of presentation will dictate the kind of signs that you will see. Signs for each of these forms will vary- some birds display all signs, others not so many. The disease occurs rarely in some other types of birds.
Marek’s viral infection (MD)
is one of the most common lymphoproliferative diseases of chickens which causes mononuclear infiltration of one or more of the following cells: peripheral nerves, gonad, iris, muscle, viscera, and skin.
MD has been called by several names including “range paralysis”, “neural lymphoma” and “skin leucosis”.
Signs may vary according to the nerve or nerves affected.
Asymmetric progressive paralysis of one or more of the extremities can be seen.
Wing involvement is characterized by drooping of the limb.
Torticollis of nerves controlling the neck is affected.
Vagal involvement will lead to dilatation of the crop and/or be gasping. If the iris is involved, eyes will lose their ability to accommodate light intensity and blindness may occur (once called “grey eye”).
Many birds die suddenly without symptoms.
There are nonspecific signs such as weight loss, paleness, anorexia, and diarrhea.
Diagnosis: Veterinary examination is necessary to diagnose Marek’s disease. The clinical signs, combined with post-mortem findings, will confirm the diagnosis in most cases, and, most importantly, rule-out other diseases. Enlargement of nerves such as the sciatic nerve is commonly seen at post-mortem.
Changes in one or more internal organs may also be observed.
Conventional Treatment: There is no treatment for Marek’s disease. Diseased birds are usually removed from the flock and humanely destroyed.
Prophylactics are homeopathic nosodes used for disease prevention.
Marek’s disease (MD or fowl paralysis) is a very common disease of chickens caused by a herpes virus.
Marek’s disease affects both commercial and backyard poultry and may result in death or severe production loss. The disease causes changes in many of the nerves and may cause tumors in major internal organs.
This nosode will help prevent viral infection.

Prevent or Treatment tick, mites and lice in your birds and bird coup.
Food grade “Diatomaceous earth, however, can be used as a natural chicken lice and mite and tick treatment.
And Diatomaceous earth can be used, along with wood ash from a fireplace. I mix the two and use it as dust bath. You’ll need to deep clean the coop and hen house, then use a paint brush to get in the gaps with the DE.
DE works effectively to exterminate the lice and mites and ticks but remains a safe pesticide to have come in close contact with chickens; it targets both full-grown and gestating mites and lice.”
Or / and dry a mixture of rosemary, thyme and mint. Works well and the nesting boxes smell divine

General Dosing and Instructions Guide
For all species, size, and ages.
(a) “HOMEOPATHICS”are sold in either a clear liquid or tiny white pills or granules – both have no odour or taste)
Easy “application dosing” for all species:
Refer to Bottle Label for suggested frequencies repeat dosing needed per day.
the rule is one must “repeat a dose” more frequently with less time in between each application dose, which is more important than the amount given each time. Repeat application will provide
(b) “HERBAL MEDICINES ” (brown liquid – strong odour & tasting)
”Application dosing” for all species and sizes:
Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat : add herbal drops (as recommended on bottle label) to some (unsweetened apple sauce or apple juice) for canines and oral syringe side of mouth. Can add other vitamins (crushed) Alkaline green powders etc. to mix.
Refer to Bottle Label for amount of drops per species size. e.g 60 drops = 1 teaspoon
What I do for example: If I was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to a small bowl add some boiled water (about a teaspoon) to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)
Giving vitamins and supplements (tablets or powders) Note: always crush tablet before adding to food or liquid mix.
Felines or small animals: make up 1 cup of mixture, adding approx. a pinch of some type of Green powder (alkaline powder) or Chlorella powder (cleansing of toxins) or 1/4 Teaspoons of Slippery elm powder (to mask the taste) with 1 teaspoon of herbs if you are having to also give herbal medicines (i.e. brown liquid)
Med to large animals: add twice to three times the amount.
DOSING: Feline or small animal: using an oral syringe draw up 1ml and gently small sips. Or add a teaspoon to meals if they don’t mind eating it with meals (mix well into food) Do not put in Fridge. Room temp is best as too cold is dislike by felines.
DOSING: Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat: try mixing well into food and hand piece before feeding main meals. Or dose same as suggested for felines, but add three times as much herbal medicines and vitamins to 1/2 cup of water or (unsweetened) apple sauce or apple juice.
What I do for example: If i was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to 1/2 cup of boiled hot water to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …. smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)
Slippery Elm Powder
If needing to add or use Slippery Elm powder
FOR CONDITIONS like …. diarrhea, stomach ulcers, or sore inflamed mouth or mouth ulcers, constipation, or IBS (i.e. colitis), plus it can also been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids.
CONVALESCING ..can been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids or not eating very well.
~ Add a small amount of powder to the mix to enough to make a runny liquid mix, if you put too much of the powder it will become thick and gluggy, if this happens you will need to add more liquid to it. Can add crushed vitamins and herbal medicines to this as well. OPTIONS: Oral dose in syringe or add to meals three times a day or more to maintain normal health again, then can stop or reduce frequencies.
