Syringomyelia  (SM)

Chiari-like malformation and Syringomyelia are complex conditions which affect the brain and spinal cord in dogs, and may be found in some brachycephalic (short-faced) feline breeds e.g. Persians. ... fluid is forced or sucked into the spinal cord resulting in dilated fluid-filled cavities. The longitudinal cavities in the spinal cord, most often in the cervical region, which may extend for multiple spinal levels. The cavities are lined by dense, gliogenous tissue and may be associated with SPINAL CORD NEOPLASMS; spinal cord traumatic injuries; and vascular malformations.

Syringomyelia is marked clinically by pain and PARESTHESIA, muscular atrophy of the hands, and analgesia with thermoanesthesia of the legs, but with the tactile sense preserved (sensory dissociation).

For Lower extremity spasticity and incontinence may also develop.
(also use homeopathic HAMPL TinkleLess 80 50ml  remedy if needed)

Spinal Arachnoid in pets

Spinal Arachnoid cysts The term arachnoid cyst is misleading as there is extramedullary expansion and cord cavitation rather than cyst formation.

Seems most often they are born with the condition – weakness  (e.g  Arachnoid cysts comprise a nervous system (CNS) disorder in which the arachnoid membrane covering of the central nervous system doesn’t develop properly)    or     could also be from a trauma.

Arachnoid cysts occur in the cervical and thoracolumbar spinal cord.
Large-breed dogs appear to develop cervical lesions more frequently,
whereas small-breed dogs develop lesions more frequently in the thoracolumbar region. This disorder has been more commonly reported in rottweilers.     * Spinal arachnoid cysts also occur in cats.

Recommendation:  We would be suggesting using the homeopathic DrawingOut 16 drops, and maybe Injury-Surgery 32 drops ( in case it was from trauma) and for symptoms causing Myelopathy  use in conjunction with the AN149 Spine Set.
*  Myelopathy describes any neurologic deficit related to the spinal cord. When due to trauma, it is known as (acute) spinal cord injury. When inflammatory, it is known as myelitis.

Degenerative Myelopathy?

Degenerative myelopathy of dogs is a slowly progressive, non-inflammatory degeneration of the white matter of the spinal cord.
Affected dogs are usually greater than 5-years-old and develop non-painful weakness of the hind legs that causes an unsteady gait. Early cases may be confused with orthopedic injuries; however, proprioceptive deficits (inability to sense where the limbs are in space) are an early feature of degenerative myelopathy and are not seen in orthopedic disease.
Signs slowly progress to paralysis of the back end of the body over 6-36 months, although severity of signs may fluctuate. An MRI or CSF analysis is performed to rule out other causes of spinal cord dysfunction.

What symptoms can present as degenerative myelopathy progresses?

  • Progressive weakness of the hind limbs.
  • Worn nails.
  • Difficulty rising.
  • Stumbling.
  • Knuckling of the toes.
  • Scuffing hind feet.
  • Wearing of the inner digits of the rear paws.
  • Loss of muscle in the rear legs.

Constricted PUPILS  (small pupils)
If its constricted, it may be Horners syndrome.

Use Homeopathic HAMPL Horners Eye Constriction  (small pupils) formula Bottle 6.
Works on nerve fibers, injury to main arteries to brain or brachial plexus, stroke, migraine.

• Side of the face decreased movement.
• Swelling of the lower eyelid
• Drooping eyelids (
Sinking of the eyeballs into the face (miosis) or  just one eye called (anisocoria)
• Small pupils
(constricted pupils)
• Red eyes.
• Each iris may be a different color.
• When an eye is affected and the same side sweating is absent.(
facial anhidrosis)

If a pupils are ENLARGED (dilated), it may be a simple inflammation or something more serious.

If only ONE EYE is ENLARGED in a cat, it is known as anisocoria and can have many different causes, including injury to the cornea, glaucoma, retinal disease and spastic pupil.

What causes anisocoria?

Anisocoria is a sign of a condition, therefore there can be several different causes, including:

  • Corneal injury such as an ulcer.
  • Disease or injury to the brain or to the nerves running to the affected eye, such as Horner’s syndrome.
  • Glaucoma, a disease in which there is increased pressure within the eye (the pupil in the affected eye will be dilated).
  • Uveitis, or inflammation of the interior of the eye (the pupil in the affected eye will usually be constricted).
  • Retinal disease.
  • Scar tissue formation between the iris and the lens (called posterior synechia), a condition that may develop following uveitis.
  • Iris atrophy (a decrease in the amount of tissue within the iris) usually a degenerative change associated with aging.
  • Congenital defect of the iris, in which the iris tissue does not develop properly.
  • Cancer within the affected eye.
  • Spastic pupil syndrome – a syndrome that may be associated with feline leukemia virus infection.
  • Other infectious diseases such as feline immunodeficiency virus or toxoplasmosis.

Other Symptoms that may come with any type of spine condition.

Injury repair, vertebra rupture, constipation or Incontinence (or severe emergency – urinary spasms and bowel paralysis – blockage) due to an inability of nerve and muscle inflammation- paralysis.  If the spine area that is week is the lower spine then you may also need to have on hand or use straight away the homeopathic HAMPL Internal Repair 263-1 50ml drops which are fast working for any urinary and bowel problems. A good remedy to have on hand for any emergency or prevention – Constipation or  Incontinence.

Contact our Perth Clinic, if your pet has injuries to the spine, and needing extra remedies and advice.* Download pdf HELP SHEET for further Naturopathic help and advice and dosages.

What is Horner Syndrome?

The eyes and some surrounding parts basically have a lot of complex nerves to control the movements and function. In general, Horner syndrome is a neurological condition of the facial muscles and eye that commonly happens in dogs, horses, cats, and many other pets.

Motor neurons with cell bodies in the brain stem, and spinal cord gray matter and axons that travel in the PNS cranial and spinal nerves, respectively, are referred to as lower motor neurons (LMNs).

Injury to either the UMNs or LMNs results in paresis or paralysis. Brain-stem and spinal cord reflexes are the phylogenetically oldest responses of the nervous system.

It is known as the results of a dysfunction in the sympathetic nerves which feed your dog’s eyes.

In most dogs, the sympathetic nerves basically belong to the autonomic nervous system, which is also known as the “flight or fight” system. These parts play an essential role in keeping:

  • Pupils open properly
  • Upper eyelids raise fully
  • Third eyelid or nictitans recess
  • Eyes in the front of your dog’s socket

When these sympathetic nerves of your dog’s eyes are not functioning normally, some of those anatomic functions listed above will not happen. As a result, it causes Horner syndrome.

Generally, this condition could be caused by some sorts of injury in the nerves or lesion.

And these injuries might happen at the upper spinal cord, the brain level, or between the face and the spinal cord.

3. HAMPL Herbal Spine 149-3  50ml (1.7oz)  liquid
Contains herbal liquid extract:
St Johns Wort
Wild Lettuce
Solomons Seal

Herbal Medicinal Uses
Comfrey – has several medicinal actions. It is known as a vulnerary and as an astringent. These properties make it useful in the healing of minor wounds, both internal and external. Comfrey can be used for minor injuries of the skin, where it will work to increase cell production, causing wounds to heal over rapidly. It can be used internally for stomach and duodenal ulcers, where it will have the same effect. Comfrey is also demulcent, producing a mucilage that coats and soothes irritated tissues. It will help reduce inflammation and at the same time lessen scarring. Comfrey also has expectorant properties and has a relaxing effect on the respiratory membranes. Since it helps to relax and soothe membranes, it is useful in coughs, asthma, and bronchitis. As an astringent, comfrey can also help control slow bleeding, as in the case of ulcers.
Horsetail is used to assist inflammation of blood vessels and joints, connective tissue diseases, hematuria, poor diuresis connected to electrolyte imbalance, mineral deficiency and poor calcium absorption
St Johns Wort –  Nerve pain and damage, multiple sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system disorder mainly characterized by inflammation, demyelination and axonal injury. Anti-inflammatory agents can be used to ameliorate the disease process. Hypericum perforatum L or St. John’s wort is widely used as an anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory remedy in traditional and herbal medicine.
Wild lettuce – Wild Lettuce is also Known as Opium Lettuce. For a good reason. While it doesnt contain any opiates, it has similar side effects when used – it acts directly on the central nervous system (CNS) to lessen the feeling of pain, just like morphine.
Boswellia – Over the last few years, Boswellia has attracted much attention in the world medical community because it possesses anti-inflammatory properties that are equal to prescription medications without the unpleasant/dangerous side effects.   Boswellia works through entirely different mechanisms than anti-inflammatory drugs. Whereas most drugs function as Cox enzyme inhibitors, Boswellia works by inhibiting lipoxygenase enzymes (LOX), which are powerful contributors to inflammation and disease. By inhibiting LOX enzymes, Boswellia effectively blocks leukotriene synthesis. Leukotrienes play a major role in promoting a whole host of age-associated, inflammation-related diseases including joint problems, intestinal disorders, cancer, and lung-related disease. And finally, it appears that Boswellia has the ability to modulate the immune system and inhibit inflammatory activity, thereby helping with a number of autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis.
Guaicum – Resin has quite a number of beneficial actions due to its chemical value – it contains resin acids, guaiaretic and hydroguaiaretic
acids, and lignans. Other components include terpenoids (guaiacsaponin), and vanilin. Anti-rheumatic,  laxative, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic actions of the plant are associated with its rich chemical content.  Guaiacum resin has an advantage over other resins by being not as irritating for the stomach and bowel. Being easy to absorb, it provides fast relief for the symptoms it is taken for. It has been mostly used in herbal medicine for rheumatic conditions and related symptoms. Patients with inflammation and painful joints have been reporting the healing effects of guaiacum. Its anti-inflammatory actions are both helpful in rheumatoid arthritis and chronic rheumatism, lessening recurrence of the attacks.
Corydalis – Dr. Wynn says she has found that you can use a higher dose than the general parameters indicate if needed, but at higher doses “sedation may occur”. How much to use is, as with the other herbs on this list, suggested by the severity of the pain.
Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum biflorum) – Solomon’s Seal is hand’s down, the most underutilized herb for canine and feline arthritis – I wish it were better known. If I had to pick one herb to promote, this would definitely be it. Michigan herbalist Jim McDonald writes …  “ I don’t think there’s a single other plants I use that so reliably produces such story-worthy results, and as there is far too little information clearly elaborating on Solomon’s Seal’s remarkable virtues…”

General Dosing and Instructions Guide

For all species, size, and ages.

(a) “HOMEOPATHICS”are sold in either a clear liquid or tiny white pills or granules – both have no odour or taste)

Easy “application dosing” for all species:

  • Homeopathic DROPS (clear liquid) DRIP or APPLY 3 to 4 drops, pat into fur/skin with bottom of bottle. i.e. back of shoulder blades (not orally) which is regarded as one dose for all size species and ages. Note: Liquid homeopathics are more suited for feline, toy dog, fish, birds and other small species
  • Homeopathic PILLS (white pills) crush a pill (or whole) and add to gum/pouch of mouth to dissolve in saliva. Does not need to swallow it.
  • Homeopathic GRANULES (white grain) and a small light sprinkle or a pinch to meals, or stir into water trough or bowl.
Casual repeat dosing can add to water bowl or feed dish or water trough for wildlife or farm animals.

Refer to Bottle Label for suggested frequencies repeat dosing needed per day.
the rule is one must “repeat a dose” more frequently with less time in between each application dose, which is more important than the amount given each time. Repeat application will provide

faster action.

(b) “HERBAL MEDICINES ” (brown liquid – strong odour & tasting)
”Application dosing” for all species and sizes:
Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat : add herbal drops (as recommended on bottle label) to some (unsweetened apple sauce or apple juice) for canines and oral syringe side of mouth. Can add other vitamins (crushed) Alkaline green powders etc. to mix.

Refer to Bottle Label for amount of drops per species size. e.g 60 drops = 1 teaspoon

What I do for example: If I was needing to give herbal solutions and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to a small bowl add some boiled water (about a teaspoon) to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)

Giving vitamins and supplements (tablets or powders) Note: always crush tablet before adding to food or liquid mix.
Felines or small animals: make up 1 cup of mixture, adding approx. a pinch of some type of Green powder (alkaline powder) or Chlorella powder (cleansing of toxins) or 1/4 Teaspoons of Slippery elm powder (to mask the taste) with 1 teaspoon of herbs if you are having to also give herbal medicines (i.e. brown liquid)
Med to large animals: add twice to three times the amount.

DOSING: Feline or small animal: using an oral syringe draw up 1ml and gently small sips. Or add a teaspoon to meals if they don’t mind eating it with meals (mix well into food) Do not put in Fridge. Room temp is best as too cold is dislike by felines.
DOSING: Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat: try mixing well into food and hand piece before feeding main meals. Or dose same as suggested for felines, but add three times as much herbal medicines and vitamins to 1/2 cup of water or (unsweetened) apple sauce or apple juice.

What I do for example: If i was needing to give herbal solutions and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to 1/2 cup of boiled hot water to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …. smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)

Slippery Elm Powder

If needing to add or use Slippery Elm powder

FOR CONDITIONS like …. diarrhea, stomach ulcers, or sore inflamed mouth or mouth ulcers, constipation, or IBS (i.e. colitis), plus it can also been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids.

CONVALESCING ..can been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids or not eating very well.
~ Add a small amount of powder to the mix to enough to make a runny liquid mix, if you put too much of the powder it will become thick and gluggy, if this happens you will need to add more liquid to it. Can add crushed vitamins and herbal medicines to this as well. OPTIONS: Oral dose in syringe or add to meals three times a day or more to maintain normal health again, then can stop or reduce frequencies.
