AN083 Colitis - (IBS) Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Mucous-bloody stools, alternating diarrhea and constipation, Parasitic Colitis in Equines (encysted strongyles)
When the colon wall is irritated it loses function, thereby losing its ability to internally uptake water, and may actually dump fluid from the bloodstream into the manure. Colitis can be caused by a variety of problems, but often results from a disruption of the normal bacterial flora due to a rapid feed change. A classic example of this is grain overload, which can cause entire populations of normally occurring microbes to die off and others to flourish. This imbalance and direct damage to the colon from the acid products from the grain can lead to colitis, which results in diarrhea.
Bacterial colitis is caused by an overgrowth of undesirable organisms in the colon.
Serious colitis causes severe diarrhea, which accounts for huge water loss, and can cause rapid loss of fluid from the circulatory system," Thal says. "This leads to a vicious cycle of low blood pressure and reduced blood flow to vital organs and circulatory shock, which can quickly result in death if untreated."
Colitis disrupts the integrity of the mucosa. Once a horse is affected, the ability of its colon to absorb water and nutrients—the colon's normal function—is compromised. In addition, major shifts take place with respect to the bacterial population needed for normal gastrointestinal (GI) function.
GI inflammation can take several forms. It can occur as a segmental condition, limited to one section of the GI tract, or as more diffuse, nonsegmental disease, says K. Gary Magdesian, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC, DACVCP, a professor at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Magdesian notes that the condition is called:
Colitis when restricted to the large colon
Typhlocolitis if the cecum also is involved
Enterocolitis if the small intestine is included
Enteritis when it's limited to the small intestine
Gastritis if the inflammation affects only the stomach
Gastroenterocolitis if the entire GI tract is involved.
Equines with Colitis
* Also signs of laminitis, is a common complication of colon inflammation.
Clinical Signs of Parasitic Colitis in Horses (encysted strongyles)
Larval cyathostominosis tends to be more common in Europe than other regions and seems to be more prevalent during late winter and early spring. It also occurs more frequently in horses under the age of six (Mair 1993). As with any pathology leading to colitis, diarrhea is a near-universal symptom of intestinal inflammation and is likewise a primary sign of cyathostomin burden.
NATURAL SOLUTION - Use this herbal wormer EquinePara 50 100ml, plus the homeopathic the colitis formula called HAMPL Colitis Repair 83-1 50ml and the HAMPL Drawing Out 16 30ml (draw out parasite from the enclosed cyst sack - encysted), and the Laminitis 51 Set if needed.
Colitis in other species
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS, IBD), Spastic Colon (spams of the stomach/colon) which are all or most often brought on or made worse from any type of stress or stressful events, overuse or sensitive to chemicals (i.e. vaccines, wormers, heartworm, etc) Some animals are more sensitive to others and are prone to digestive disorders and inflammations, due to a weakened immune system from prolonging stress - allowing intestinal parasites and bacteria like giardia and campylobacter.
Colitis, IBS, and spastic colon or general inflammation of the colon (large intestine) cause diarrhea in dogs and cats.
Colitis is an inflammation or irritation of the colon or large intestine and, you guessed it: it commonly causes diarrhea in our furry friends. Colitis can be acute (meaning it comes on suddenly) or chronic (lasting several weeks or longer, or recurring). There are several potential causes of colitis.
Intestinal parasites such as roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and Giardia
A secondary reaction to antibiotics and many other medications
Dietary intolerance or allergy
Dietary indiscretion, such as eating grass, garbage, or people food
Inflammatory and irritable bowel disease (IBD)
Bowel cancer in older dogs
Dogs with colitis often have fresh, red blood and/or mucus in their stools.
They may strain to defecate and go more often than normal. In some cases, your dog may seem constipated and strain without producing any feces. With acute colitis, your dog might show no other signs of being sick except diarrhea or straining to defecate.
With chronic colitis, you could notice poor appetite, weight loss, and general lethargy.
2. Mucus colitis
A common gastrointestinal disorder involving an abnormal condition of gut contractions (motility) and gut sensation (hypersensitivity) characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, mucous in stools, and irregular bowel habits with diarrhea or constipation or alternating diarrhea and constipation.
Important supplements to include in your dog's meals - in conjunction with herbs and homeopathic remedies are:
The Colostrum powder (best for felines and toy dogs) or Colostrum chewable tablets (yummy)
Colostrumhealth 100% pure Colostrum Powder
http://www.colostrum.gen.nz/ Order online.
Colostrum can repair leaky gut syndrome which can be the cause of constipation.
* if constipation is caused by a deficiency in minerals - potassium and magnesium.
for repairing the flora in the gut. Since colostrum can decrease IBS (leaky gut syndrome) ulcerative colitis etc i.e. intestinal permeability and enhance the assimilation of nutrients, using colostrum as a foundation supplement can enhance the bioavailability of nutrients and protect the digestive tract from toxins and pathogenic invaders. This effect can also be increased when combined with probiotics powder from the health food store. (I buy my powders and capsules from New Zealand website).
Feline: 1/4 teaspoon in meals.
Small to Med to Large Canine: Mix in 1 teaspoon of goats milk or coconut milk - the second best option is food.
Magnesium (mineral) The best type of Magnesium to use for IBS Constipation. Deficiency of this mineral can be IBS, spasms etc. While both "magnesium citrate" and "magnesium oxide" are useful as laxatives, magnesium citrate may have one advantage. According to University of Maryland Medical Center, magnesium citrate is better absorbed in the body than other forms of magnesium, suggesting that it may work more effectively.
If your pet has chronic or acute attacks or is elderly?
We would also suggest having on hand the Gastric Distention (bloat) called HAMPL Acute Intestinal Bloat 136 30ml formula and HAMPLCramp formula(code 267) for fast emergency action, especially needed for older pets that need extra help as body is more sluggish and you notice your pet has some cramping or spasms in stomach - colon area use in conjunction with the HAMPL Colitis formula set. Complete repair of Colitis pain using the natural formula's which are an effective natural solution to internal colon conditions like Colitis which soothe, repair the mucous membrane of the bowel and large and small intestines.
A solution from: Chronic or Acute state causing diarrhea, pain in the abdomen from chronic inflammation of the large intestine (colon). If your pet has been diagnosed with possible "Ulcerative" colitis (IBS). i.e. Boxers are known to acquire these conditions. Refer to: (099) HAMPL Ulcerative Colitis Set (which has the Slippery Elm powder included in the set)

The Chaga herb that is in the HAMPL Intestinal Herb 83-2 formula is purported to reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, enhance liver health, and fight viruses. In addition, some proponents claim that chaga has anti-tumor activity and can help treat and/or prevent some forms of cancer.
The Benefits of Chaga- There is currently a lack of clinical trials testing the effects of chaga. However, some preliminary research suggests that chaga mushroom components may offer certain health benefits. For instance, a number of studies on cell cultures show that extracts may possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-stimulating properties. Here's a look at several findings from the available research on chaga's health benefits:
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (is not a disease) Its a condition
Chaga may help treat inflammatory bowel disease (such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), according to a 2007 study published in Biofactors. In tests on cells obtained from 20 healthy volunteers and 20 people with inflammatory bowel disease, scientists found that treating the cells with chaga extract helped reduce oxidative stress (a destructive biological process thought to contribute to the development of inflammatory bowel disease).
For all species, size, and ages.
(a) “HOMEOPATHICS” are sold in either a clear liquid or tiny white pills or granules – both have no odour or taste) Easy “application dosing” for all species:
Refer to Bottle Label for suggested frequencies repeat dosing needed per day.
NOTE: the rule is one must “repeat a dose” more frequently with less time in between each application dose, which is more important than the amount given each time. Repeat application will provide faster action.
(b) “HERBAL MEDICINES ” (brown liquid – strong odour & tasting) ”Application dosing” for all species: Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat : add herbal drops (as recommended on bottle label) to some (unsweetened apple sauce or apple juice) for canines and oral syringe side of mouth. Can add other vitamins (crushed) Alkaline green powders etc. to mix. Refer to: Bottle Label for amount of drops per species size. Feline, toy dog, rabbit, or other small animals: add 3 – 4 drops of the brown herbal formula add 1 teaspoon of hot water from kettle, let cool, add another teaspoon of cold water, then oral dose side of mouth – with small sips at a time until 1ml is taken.
What I do for example: If I was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to a small bowl add some boiled water (about a teaspoon) to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)
(c) “NUTRITIONAL Mix ” Giving vitamins and supplements (tablets or powders) NB. Always crush tablet before adding to food or liquid mix. Felines or small animals: make up 1/4 cup of mixture, adding approx. a pinch of some type of Green powder (alkaline powder) or Chlorella powder (cleansing of toxins) or Vital Greens (highly nutritional) with 10 drops of herbs if you are having to also give herbal medicines (i.e. brown liquid) (after a little hot water added to dissolve alcohol) Med to large animals: add twice to three times the amount.
DOSING: Feline or small animal: using an oral syringe draw up 1ml and gently small sips. Or add a teaspoon to meals if they don’t mind eating it with meals (mix well into food) Do not put in Fridge. Room temp is best as too cold is dislike by felines.
DOSING: Canine, equine, cow, sheep, goat: try mixing well into food and hand piece before feeding main meals. Or dose same as suggested for felines, but add three times as much herbal medicines and vitamins to 1/2 cup of water or (unsweetened) apple sauce or apple juice.
What I do for example: If i was needing to give herb treatments and/or vitamin supplements to feline or toy dog or other small animals – I add this herbal formula to a small bowl add some boiled water (about a teaspoon) to it so to dissolve the alcohol in it, let cool, then add what vitamins If needed (powder or crushed tab – a pinch) mixed in another 50ml of water, and oral syringe once a day or twice a day …. smear on a little “vegemite paste” (if cannot get Vegemite in your country, try fresh pate or slippery elm powder added can help mask the taste) around and on tip of oral syringe, as felines seem to real like the taste of this paste, but not too much as it is quite a strong taste)
Slippery Elm Powder If needing to add or use Slippery Elm powder
FOR CONDITIONS like …. diarrhea, stomach ulcers, or sore inflamed mouth or mouth ulcers, constipation, or IBS (i.e. colitis), plus it can also been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids.
CONVALESCING ..can been given as a liquid meal given orally via syringe as it is highly nutritional (oral liquid feeding) for convalescing during illness when not eating solids or not eating very well. ~ Add a small amount of powder to the mix to enough to make a runny liquid mix, if you put too much of the powder it will become thick and gluggy, if this happens you will need to add more liquid to it. Can add crushed vitamins and herbal medicines to this as well. OPTIONS: Oral dose in syringe or add to meals three times a day or more to maintain normal health again, then can stop or reduce frequencies.
